Explore „DEEP SEA”

It is "nature's darkroom", it knows no sun and yet allows millions of undiscovered organisms to thrive. The deep sea contains two thirds of the earth's biosphere; its research presents one of the greatest challenges of modern science.

The Lokschuppen Exhibition Centre in Rosenheim brings the deep-sea waters and its mysteries to the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. In cooperation with the German Marine Research Consortium and the Zoological Museum of the University Hamburg, the Lokschuppen presents TIEFSEE, a captivating, scientifically substantiated and interactive glimpse into the world of the oceans and the marine sciences. TIEFSEE will fill families, students and the scientific community with enthusiasm – with 130 exhibits from eighteen top cooperating institutions and marine research museums. Sixty original specimens and numerous models of deep sea creatures are sure to fascinate. For this is an unknown world – deep, dark, and cold, yet teeming with life! Visitors can track big research vessels in their scientific activities – from the oceans' creation four billion years ago to the future of modern oceanography. Living creatures including the octopus, frogfish and lightfishes, genuine parts of a giant squid, a 130-centimeter anglerfish specimen, a section of an original black smoker and real lava from the bottom of the sea highlight the collection. Visitors will get a real idea of what it's like to be a researcher on board the FS Meteor by operating the arms of the Quest diving robot in a simulated environment.
